TYPO3 Upgrade Process
Upgrading a TYPO3 installation involves several key steps to ensure a smooth transition while maintaining the stability and functionality of the project. The primary steps are:
1. Investigation
This phase is crucial for collecting all necessary information to execute the upgrade. The investigation phase concludes with a detailed plan, including task-specific hourly estimates. Investigation for simpler projects takes 4-8 hours. Key actions during this phase include: Access Verification, Extension Analysis, Custom Functionality Review, Upgrade Path Evaluation, Project Complexity Analysis.
These factors influence the upgrade timeline. Based on the findings, decide on the target TYPO3 version—usually the latest LTS version—and account for potential constraints, such as licensing or additional costs.
2. Local Environment Setup
Perform all upgrade tasks in a local environment to streamline the process and facilitate a deeper understanding of the project structure. Best practices include: Using a local setup with identical media files and database as the production environment, and Utilizing Composer-based TYPO3 installations managed under DDEV (a Docker-based PHP development environment).
The environment setup duration depends on the complexity of the project, but typically it takes around 8 hours.
3. The Upgrade
The upgrade process varies based on the difference between the current TYPO3 version and the target version. For a single major version upgrade: Upgrade the TYPO3 core, Update supported third-party extensions, Run upgrade wizards for automatic core and extension migrations, Manually adjust extensions lacking update wizards, Address unsupported extensions by finding alternatives or implementing custom solutions, Modify custom extensions for templates and business logic.
For upgrades spanning multiple major TYPO3 versions, the process must be iterative.
4. Local Testing
Although minimal testing is conducted throughout the development phase to verify that applied upgrades function correctly, involving a dedicated tester ensures a more thorough process. If issues arise, fixes are applied, and the testing process is repeated. If no issues are detected, this phase typically takes no longer than 4 hours.
5. Deployment
Once all local tests are successfully passed, the project can be deployed to the live environment. Deployment considerations include: Environment Compatibility (if the client’s current environment differs from the target project’s requirements, options include updating the existing environment or hosting the project on our infrastructure (subject to an annual hosting fee)) and Deployment Tasks (these include deployment itself and pre- and post-deployment activities to ensure a smooth transition).
This phase usually requires around 8 hours to complete.
6. Production Testing
After deployment, the upgraded project undergoes live testing to verify its functionality in the production environment. Live testing generally takes a similar amount of time as local testing, approximately 4 hours.
